Paul Urban Shaped paintings in oil and acrylic

Construction & Assembly

assembly 3assembly 2

Each piece is a constructed 3D shape with overlapping shaped planes. On the smaller pieces I use heavy weight watercolor paper glued to lightweight balsa or basswood. These are hand cut and glued into shapes, and then triple primed with gesso, edges are painted with acrylic. On the larger works, I use power tools to cut and assemble my shapes, generally from Bass plywood and pine. Assembly techniques include gluing, biscuit joining, screws, and angle hardware. These too are triple primed with gesso and edges painted with acrylic. Small pieces are generally hung with velcro, the larger pieces are wired for hanging.
